Future Tenses - Be Going To/Will

We use will and be going to when we talk about the future.

 

be (am/is/are) going to is used for future plans, something we intend to do

Affirmative: SUBJECT+AM/IS/ARE GOING TO+VERB+OBJECT

I am (I’m)

going to work.

He is (He’s)

She is (She’s)

It is (It’s)

going to work.

You are (You’re)

We are (We’re)

They are (They’re)

going to work.

Negative:SUBJECT+AM/IS/ARE NOT GOING TO+VERB+OBJECT

I am (I’m) not going to work.

He is (He’s)

She is (She’s)

It is (It’s)

not going to work.

You are (You’re)

We are (We’re)

They are (They’re)

not going to work.

Question:AM/IS/ARE GOING TO+SUBJECT+VERB+OBJECT?

   -Hi Jane! Where are you going?                                    We’re going to travel the world.

will is usually used for predictions, ideas and opinions about the future

    There will be flying cars  in 2145.                  The economy will grow over the next decade.

                  

I think people will live on Mars in the future.              They will eventually get married.

 

BUT we use be going to for predictions with an indicator we can see

                    

    Look! It’s going to hit the woman!                 Do you see the dark clouds? It’s going to rain heavily!

 

Time expressions: tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, next summer, in five years, in a hundred years, in the long term etc.

Examples:

  • There will be full moon tomorrow.
  • Uncle Sam will be 50 next Sunday.
  • Mila will be happy to see her boyfriend after a long time.
  • The party will be amazing tonight!
  • I’m sure you will do well in the exam today.
  • Will they believe that? - Sure, they will.
