Past Form of the Verb BE

We use the verb “be” to describe things, when we talk about what something was and how it was in the past. We use it with nouns and adjectives.

Affirmative:

was good.

 were good.

Negative:

was not (wasn't) good.

were not (weren't) good.

Question:

With adjectives:

Gandhi was wise and humble.

The weather was rainy yesterday.

Bonnie and Clyde were daring.

Last night was fun.

The movie was boring.

The soldiers were hungry.

With nouns:

Caesar was a Roman emperor.

Mary was in London last month.

John was a professor at Yale University.

The kids were at school.

I was a brunette when I was a kid.

Behind them was a tiger.
